Hello everyone! On this beautiful Sunday we will talk about Assassin’s Creed franchise. It is unavoidable with all the fuss going on about the new game. Depending on your timezone and the country you live in you may have already played it. Some of us were lucky enough to get our hands on the newest game before others did. Luckily for us, we were among those who had the opportunity to play Assassin’s Creed Origins before most others.
Naturally, we want to share our experience with you guys. However, we also want to hear your side of the story. So before going any further into the article, we’d like to point out that this isn’t an article dedicated exclusively to AC Origins. In fact, this is the post that will focus on the Assassin’s Creed franchise as a whole. So, basically we will reminiscence about the good old times as well as try to look into the future.
Of course, we will give you our honest opinions about the new game as well. Since most of you still haven’t bought the game, it is only right to know what exactly you’re buying. And let us tell you right off the bat that this isn’t unlike any other AC game you’ve played before. It really seems like Ubisoft tried to raise the bar for the upcoming games of this franchise. Now this can be both good and bad, depending on the course they take…but more on that later.
So without further ado let’s close this introduction and focus on the important stuff, the AC Franchise that is…
Now let us start of by saying that this is the game we really wouldn’t want to rush. For this reason, we haven’t completed it yet, but we will soon enough. However, all of us at GameBag already made quite some progress in the game. The hours played are coming along nicely and combined we have more than 80 hours of playtime.
We consider this to be enough to develop a certain opinion about the game and its core mechanics. Certainly we won’t go into too much details as we would hate to spoil anything. But worry not, our quick little rant won’t break any of your immersion.
If you think this is a game similar to the previous AC games you’d be both wrong and right. We know it’s confusing, but don’t worry – we’ll elaborate.
So about the wrong part… This is by far the biggest ‘evolution’ of an AC game, and yes it is even bigger than Unity! This means that the whole gameplay aspect is completely revamped. Depending on your stance about the previous games this could be the best thing ever or the thing that makes you not buy the game. For us it was surely a step in the right direction, not necessarily a step towards the perfect Assassin’s Creed game, but a step towards a good AAA game nonetheless.
It really seems like Ubisoft was taking a closer look at other successful games on the market in order to improve their game such as the newest Legend of Zelda, Horizon Zero Dawn, Far Cry or even Witcher series.
Now about the right part… So this is still an Assassin’s Creed game after all. Which means you will follow a storyline of an assassin from ancient times (now more ancient than ever!). You will learn the secrets of the order that you’ve never fathomed before. Unfortunately we won’t tell you anything more about the story or Bayek himself since this is best experienced by yourself.
When we said that the whole concept of the game was reconstructed and redefined we weren’t being dramatic. In fact, the signature ability of all assassins has been completely reinvented. No longer will you have flashy wallhacks that you can turn on with the tap of a button….This time you will have a real eagle that follows you around! And the eagle vision is now really eagle vision – meaning you will look through the eyes of your avian buddy! It was very cool we won’t lie!
Combat has been changed so much that we can’t wait to see all the ‘expert game reviewers’ comparing it to Dark Souls! Now, in all seriousness, combat has been made more difficult but it is still pretty easy once you get the hang of it. The variety of weapons and the way you fight with them is what really made us happy! Bows, shields, spears, shortswords, longswords all have a different use and purpose now and it is really refreshing.
Speaking of combat, the whole AI system has been reworked making stealth, combat, climbing and fleeing much tougher! It kind of reminded us of Shadow of Mordor…we don’t really know why!
Without spoiling anything this is as far as we’d like to go – at least for now!
So with the newest installment of the franchise it is clear that Ubisoft is aiming toward an RPG style game, rather than a stealthy assassins game…which is completely fine by us. However, this is particularly bad because some of the fans (most of them even) really liked the stealthy approach that former games had.
While AC 1 and AC 4 really look different on their own it is clear that AC Origins was by far the biggest leap from an AC game to an classic RPG. Again, this might be good for the RPG fans but bad because some of the hardcore AC fans will get alienated. Speaking of hardcore Assassin’s Creed fans and Black Flag, if you’re still playing Assassin’s Creed on your phone – be sure to check out our Assassin’s Creed Pirates hack.
So tell us, what do you think about this change in pace? Will this restore glory to the already damaged reputation of Assassin’s Creed games? Or will it ensure and quicken its downfall? We always like to feel the pulse of our community because we think it is important to stay in touch with your own audience. So tell us, down below in the comment section, what do you make out of all this change?
